Sermon Text: John 4:5-14; Scripture Reading: Isaiah 49:1-26; Other Scripture Reading: Isaiah 65:1-25
Message delivered by Pastor Richard Stetler, Resurrection Hope Congregation, on September 7, 2025
Jesus stopped at the well for a dual purpose; one was to refresh and nourish His physical body with water from the well, and food that His disciples would bring back from town, as noted in verse 8; and the other was spiritual nourishment for His soul, whereby proclaiming the good news to the Samaritan woman would be spiritual nourishment for Him, as He says to His disciples in verse 31 of this fourth Chapter.
Jesus sets aside His need for physical nourishment to first obtain spiritual nourishment as He engages the Samaritan woman in a conversation concerning her spiritual welfare. This conversation begins in verse 7 and ends with verse 26. In these verses, there are four aspects to the conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman, which, by the way, makes a wonderful general formula, that would be useful for us, as we engage others in conversation regarding spiritual matters. The four aspects can generally be identified as; first, paying attention to a conversation so as to identify any point of common interest with eyes focused on communicating the good news of Jesus Christ; then, steering the conversation so as to identify the person’s need for the gospel using that common point of interest; third, patiently and compassionately overcoming objections that are distractions to the message of the gospel; finally, direct the focus of the conversation to Jesus Christ; who He is and what He accomplished for all sinners who believe in Him.
In this message we will look at Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman concerning the Living Water that He gives to all who ask it of Him, which will encompass the first and second aspects to engaging others in conversation regarding spiritual matters.
