“Oh, give thanks to the Lord , for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. . . . Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!” (Psalms 107:1, 15)
The very nature of God is reason enough to give thanks to Him; but the Psalmist goes on to spell out how God has evidenced to all of the “children of men” that He is good and His mercy or lovingkindness endures forever. (Psalm 107:1-3)
Are you wandering in a spiritual wilderness, where your soul is hungry and thirsty; and feel as though you are all alone, so that your soul faints within you? Cry out to the Lord by faith in your troubled soul and He will deliver you out of your distresses; He will satisfy your longing soul, and fill your hungry soul with goodness – Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord! (Psalm 107:4-9)
Are sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death, bound in affiction and irons, because you have rebelled against God and His word, so that your heart is heavy with meaningless labor and helpless to help yourself? Cry out to the Lord by faith in your weighed down heart and He will save you out of your distresses and bring you out of darkness as He shines the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6); and bring you out of the shadow of death, by the death of Jesus Christ who suffered, died and rose again for your sins, paying the penalty for your rebellion; who also broke the chains that bind your heart and mind having redeemed many sinners like you and me from the bondage to sin- Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord! (Psalm 107:10-16)
Are you a fool, because you have loved your sins and the transgressions against God and His Law, abhorring the feast that is before you to feed on in the written Word of God; instead, you feast on the commandments, opinions and philosophies of men that draw you to the “gates of death”? Cry out to the Lord by faith in your trouble and He will save you from your distresses and afflictions that resulted from your love for sin and yourself. He will send His word to heal you from your foolishness as He renews your mind by His word and Spririt, and delivers you from the destructive path that draws you down the fool’s highway to the “gates of death”– Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord! (Psalm 107:17-21)
On this Thankgiving Day, Let all of the children of men give thanks to the Lord. And yet, sadly, they will not! It is only by the grace of God that they will, because sin has darkened man’s mind and hardened his soul so they can neither see the goodness of God’s works toward them, nor would they give thanks to Him for we live in a rebellious and wicked generation. Pray that God will not only give you a thankful heart for His many blessings toward you through Jesus Christ our Lord; but also that God would so work His grace through the Gospel of His Beloved Son that they would “sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare His works with rejoicing” in the assembly of all people both great and small; both common and noble (Psalm 107:22, 32) – Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord!
